Job description

We are looking for a Registered Veterinary Nurse to provide maternity leave cover at a 24hr animal hospital in Southend-on-Sea for 6 to 12 months.

The role is most suitable for an RVN with previous experience gained in a small animal clinic is essential as you will be using your experience to teach and support others. You must also have previous experience of dealing with patients with complex needs. You must be capable of performing general nursing duties and be keen to develop your skills. You must also be open to helping your colleagues develop their knowledge in order to deliver the gold standard of care to the practice's loyal client base. You will also help in the development of nursing clinics. You must be prepared to work in emergency and critical care situations as this practice is a 24hr animal hospital. You will be joining a large and supportive team of skilled vets and nurses.

The role is full time for 40 hours per week over 5 days, along with 1 in 6 full weekends and on-call shifts on a rota.


The role involves all aspects of nursing and includes sharing best practice and supporting and developing the rest of the nursing team. The nurse will be responsible for supporting the PCAs and CCAs within the team. They will be part of the nurse clinics that run daily. The RVN will be involved in administering treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, assisting in surgeries, and providing advice to clients. They will also have clinical coaching opportunities to support SVNs within the region. There are a certain number of administrational duties however support is provided from the regional team.

The role is ideal for an RVN who thrives on providing a high level of veterinary care, teaching student nurses and someone who is ambitious to develop their career.


There is continual support and mentoring available. There are ongoing internal courses to develop clinical skills and personal skills as well as training to help communicate delicate information to clients.

About you

  • You will be a Qualified Veterinary Nurse who is registered with the RCVS
  • You will have previous experience of working in a small animal practice
  • You will have a good amount of nursing experience in all aspects of nursing
  • You will have good organisational skills
  • You must have a friendly and compassionate attitude and be always approachable
  • You will be ambitious to continue with further education and training
  • You will be forward thinking and always looking at ways to develop the clinical nursing team further
  • You will enjoy running nurse clinics
  • You will have experience in clinical coaching and or happy to become a clinical coach
  • You will enjoy leading a team and providing ongoing support to fellow team members
  • You must be motivated and passionate about your work and share this and promote this ethos with other members of staff
